Advanced Framing & Structural Carpentry
Advance your framing expertise through hands-on training in roof framing, floor systems, stair construction, structural hardware, and precision layout techniques used in residential and light commercial construction.
Prerequisite: Framing Fundamentals
Tuition: $895 USD per student
Course Overview
Master Advanced Structural Framing
Build on your foundational framing skills by learning advanced structural carpentry techniques used in residential and commercial construction. This boot camp focuses on roof framing, floor systems, stair construction, structural hardware, and building techniques that ensure every structure is straight, square, and level.
Course tuition: $895 USD per student.
Your Class Plan
What You’ll Learn
Focuses on interpreting structural details, floor/roof/stair geometry, connector schedules, coordination conflicts, and inspection. It does not repeat the beginner wall-building course or authorize structural design.
Before you start: Framing Fundamentals or instructor-approved equivalent experience. Students must demonstrate accurate layout, safe cutting, and basic plan reading.
Planned teaching timetable: 8:30 AM–4:30 PM on Day 1 and Day 2, including breaks and lunch. This is the planned class schedule; actual class dates, daily times and venue will be confirmed before enrollment.
By the end, you should be able to
- Trace a load path through a supplied structural detail without redesigning it.
- Read floor, roof, stair, and engineered-lumber details and identify missing information.
- Lay out a floor/roof/stair training sample using supplied dimensions.
- Check connector, fastener, bearing, and service-penetration details against approved information.
- Produce an RFI and inspection plan for a framing conflict.
Day 1 — Foundations and guided practice
8:30–9:00
Prerequisite check, supported-assembly limits, lifting/temporary stability, and stop-work decisions.
9:00–10:30
Load paths, bearing points, floor systems, engineered lumber, and reading structural schedules.
10:30–10:45
Break
10:45–12:00
Connector and fastener demonstrations; compare approved details with intentionally flawed samples.
12:00–12:45
Lunch and drinks included
12:45–2:15
Layout lab: floor bay and roof geometry from supplied drawings and manufacturer details.
2:15–2:30
Break
2:30–3:45
Build a floor/roof connection sample; record critical hold points before concealment.
3:45–4:30
Review tolerances, material choices, and an RFI for a service-route conflict.
Day 2 — Application, assessment and next steps
8:30–9:00
Review load path and connector errors from the first build.
9:00–10:30
Stair geometry and roof layout problem-solving; dimensional exercises on bench-height models.
10:30–10:45
Break
10:45–12:00
Inspect seeded defects involving connectors, bearing, cuts, and bracing; document permitted next actions.
12:00–12:45
Lunch and drinks included
12:45–2:15
Complete an independent detail interpretation, mock-up correction, and RFI briefing.
2:15–2:30
Break
2:30–3:00
Individual knowledge test: 10 course-specific questions; 20 available points.
3:00–4:00
Individual practical/project assessment, using the course rubric and observations gathered during the project.
4:00–4:30
Feedback, correction plan, certificate eligibility review, and recommended next steps.
Your hands-on project
Interpret an instructor-approved floor-to-wall/roof detail and construct one supported connector sample. Lay out a stair or roof-geometry template from supplied dimensions, then diagnose three seeded conflicts and issue a written RFI. No occupied structure is altered.
Final knowledge test
Ten questions specific to Advanced Framing & Structural Carpentry, covering the skills, decisions, calculations and safety boundaries taught in this course. Each question is worth two points. Pass mark: 16 out of 20 (80%).
The instructor provides the test after training. Approved accessibility support may change how you respond while keeping the same learning standard.
Practical assessment
Complete the course project and demonstrate the skills individually. Five criteria are scored from 0–4. Pass mark: 16 out of 20 (80%), with no criterion below 2 and every critical safety check passed.
What your instructor will assess
- Manage temporary stability, cutting, lifting, and the stop-work boundary.
- Trace the load path and correctly identify required bearing/connection details.
- Produce dimensionally correct layout calculations and a marked template.
- Install the specified sample connector and identify unapproved substitutions/cuts.
- Submit an actionable RFI and inspection/correction record.
Training boundaries: No design changes, field cuts to engineered members, truss alteration, or elevated structural work without approved engineering and site controls. Class practice uses supplied designs and supported models.
Earn your certificate of completion
- Complete both days and all required learning activities; missed content must be made up.
- Pass the knowledge test and practical assessment separately; a strong score in one does not cancel a failed result in the other.
- Pass every critical safety check and receive the instructor’s sign-off.
If you need more practice, your instructor records the missing skills and assigns focused review and reassessment. Certificates are issued only after all requirements are met.
Your certificate records completion of this Construction Guys course. It is not a contractor license, trade license, or authorization to perform regulated work independently.
Next learning step: Blueprint Reading. Your instructor can help you choose based on demonstrated skills.
