Course Overview
Master Construction Blueprint Reading
Develop the essential skills needed to understand and interpret construction drawings with confidence. This hands-on course teaches you how to read architectural plans, recognize industry-standard symbols, interpret elevations and sections, understand construction details, and accurately work with scaled drawings and site plans.
Course tuition: $395 USD per student.
Your Class Plan
What You’ll Learn
A drawing-navigation and coordination workshop. Students learn to find, cross-check and question information, not to redesign structural or building-service systems.
Before you start: Comfort with basic arithmetic; no previous drawing-reading experience required.
Planned teaching timetable: 8:30 AM–4:30 PM on Day 1 and Day 2, including breaks and lunch. This is the planned class schedule; actual class dates, daily times and venue will be confirmed before enrollment.
By the end, you should be able to
- Find title blocks, revisions, indexes, legends, and drawing references.
- Interpret plans, elevations, sections, details, and schedules together.
- Use a stated scale correctly while prioritizing written dimensions and current drawings.
- Produce a simple quantity takeoff with traceable assumptions.
- Write an RFI when two documents conflict or information is missing.
Day 1 — Foundations and guided practice
8:30–9:00
Entry measuring/math check, drawing-set orientation, revisions and document control.
9:00–10:30
Plans, elevations, sections, grids, symbols, legends, and detail callouts.
10:30–10:45
Break
10:45–12:00
Demonstrate tracing one door from plan to elevation/detail/schedule.
12:00–12:45
Lunch and drinks included
12:45–2:15
Students locate dimensions and build a room/door/window information sheet.
2:15–2:30
Break
2:30–3:45
Scale exercises with a printed calibration line and quantity takeoff from a fictional room plan.
3:45–4:30
Check units, revisions, assumptions, and a deliberately missing detail.
Day 2 — Application, assessment and next steps
8:30–9:00
Review navigation errors and confirm which drawing set is current.
9:00–10:30
Site plans, levels, service coordination, specifications, and conflicting dimensions.
10:30–10:45
Break
10:45–12:00
Coordinate a small project package and write RFIs for seeded discrepancies.
12:00–12:45
Lunch and drinks included
12:45–2:15
Complete an individual drawing scavenger hunt, takeoff, and RFI presentation.
2:15–2:30
Break
2:30–3:00
Individual knowledge test: 10 course-specific questions; 20 available points.
3:00–4:00
Individual practical/project assessment, using the course rubric and observations gathered during the project.
4:00–4:30
Feedback, correction plan, certificate eligibility review, and recommended next steps.
Your hands-on project
Review a supplied small-project drawing set, complete a ten-item information hunt, calculate one room quantity, and write two RFIs. Identify drawing/revision references for every answer.
Final knowledge test
Ten questions specific to Blueprint Reading, covering the skills, decisions, calculations and safety boundaries taught in this course. Each question is worth two points. Pass mark: 16 out of 20 (80%).
The instructor provides the test after training. Approved accessibility support may change how you respond while keeping the same learning standard.
Practical assessment
Complete the course project and demonstrate the skills individually. Five criteria are scored from 0–4. Pass mark: 16 out of 20 (80%), with no criterion below 2 and every critical safety check passed.
What your instructor will assess
- Confirm current revisions, units, scale and document limits.
- Navigate correctly between plan, section, detail and schedule.
- Extract dimensions and quantities with traceable references.
- Detect conflicting/missing information without inventing a design answer.
- Write clear RFIs and a coordinated project summary.
Training boundaries: Paper/model work only. Drawings are teaching exercises, not permit-ready designs. Never scale an uncalibrated screen image to override a written dimension.
Earn your certificate of completion
- Complete both days and all required learning activities; missed content must be made up.
- Pass the knowledge test and practical assessment separately; a strong score in one does not cancel a failed result in the other.
- Pass every critical safety check and receive the instructor’s sign-off.
If you need more practice, your instructor records the missing skills and assigns focused review and reassessment. Certificates are issued only after all requirements are met.
Your certificate records completion of this Construction Guys course. It is not a contractor license, trade license, or authorization to perform regulated work independently.
Next learning step: Estimating & Project Management. Your instructor can help you choose based on demonstrated skills.
