Master the Fundamentals of Concrete Construction

Build a strong foundation in concrete construction by learning the essential techniques used on professional job sites. This hands-on boot camp covers formwork, reinforcement, concrete mixing, slab placement, finishing methods, and expansion joints for durable, long-lasting concrete structures.

Course tuition: $695 USD per student.

Your Class Plan

What You’ll Learn

Tuition: $695 USDBeginnerTwo-day boot campKnowledge test + practical assessment

Covers a small nonstructural slab sample from layout to curing plan. Previously cured specimens support defect review; a two-day class does not establish final concrete strength.

Before you start: No concrete experience required.

Planned teaching timetable: 8:30 AM–4:30 PM on Day 1 and Day 2, including breaks and lunch. This is the planned class schedule; actual class dates, daily times and venue will be confirmed before enrollment.

By the end, you should be able to

  • Calculate volume and prepare a basic quantity/order worksheet.
  • Set supported training forms and place reinforcement to a supplied detail.
  • Explain mix consistency, placement sequence, and safe handling.
  • Practice screeding, floating, edging, and a specified finish at the appropriate stage.
  • Document joints, protection, curing, and inspection limits.

Day 1 — Foundations and guided practice

8:30–9:00

Wet-cement burns, silica, lifting, tool and washout controls.

9:00–10:30

Volume calculations, base preparation, forms, reinforcement, and reading a supplied slab detail.

10:30–10:45

Break

10:45–12:00

Demonstrate form setup, elevation checks, reinforcement support, and placement planning.

12:00–12:45

Lunch and drinks included

12:45–2:15

Build and inspect a small training form; complete a pre-pour checklist.

2:15–2:30

Break

2:30–3:45

Mix/place a controlled sample batch under instructor supervision; practice initial screeding/finishing when ready.

3:45–4:30

Record batch conditions, finish timing, joints, curing protection, and cleanup.

Day 2 — Application, assessment and next steps

8:30–9:00

Inspect protected samples without treating early hardness as proof of strength.

9:00–10:30

Compare finishing stages, joint types, curing methods, and common surface defects using staged specimens.

10:30–10:45

Break

10:45–12:00

Practice a second small placement/finish station and write a weather/curing contingency plan.

12:00–12:45

Lunch and drinks included

12:45–2:15

Individually complete a volume calculation, form/reinforcement inspection, and finishing demonstration.

2:15–2:30

Break

2:30–3:00

Individual knowledge test: 10 course-specific questions; 20 available points.

3:00–4:00

Individual practical/project assessment, using the course rubric and observations gathered during the project.

4:00–4:30

Feedback, correction plan, certificate eligibility review, and recommended next steps.

Your hands-on project

Prepare a 24 x 24 x 2 inch nonstructural sample form, inspect reinforcement only where specified in the exercise, and participate in a controlled placement. Demonstrate finishing on a sample at the correct stage and submit a curing/joint record.

Final knowledge test

Ten questions specific to Concrete Fundamentals, covering the skills, decisions, calculations and safety boundaries taught in this course. Each question is worth two points. Pass mark: 16 out of 20 (80%).

The instructor provides the test after training. Approved accessibility support may change how you respond while keeping the same learning standard.

Practical assessment

Complete the course project and demonstrate the skills individually. Five criteria are scored from 0–4. Pass mark: 16 out of 20 (80%), with no criterion below 2 and every critical safety check passed.

What your instructor will assess

  • Prevent skin/cement exposure, dust release, and uncontrolled washout.
  • Calculate quantities and verify the form dimensions/elevation.
  • Check base/form/reinforcement against the supplied detail.
  • Use appropriate placing/finishing sequence without premature finishing.
  • Document curing, joint intent, defects, and limits of the early inspection.

Training boundaries: Small controlled samples only; no structural slab design, unsupported formwork, or uncontrolled cement/silica exposure. Material and environmental conditions determine finishing and curing timing.

Earn your certificate of completion

  • Complete both days and all required learning activities; missed content must be made up.
  • Pass the knowledge test and practical assessment separately; a strong score in one does not cancel a failed result in the other.
  • Pass every critical safety check and receive the instructor’s sign-off.

If you need more practice, your instructor records the missing skills and assigns focused review and reassessment. Certificates are issued only after all requirements are met.

Your certificate records completion of this Construction Guys course. It is not a contractor license, trade license, or authorization to perform regulated work independently.

Next learning step: Masonry. Your instructor can help you choose based on demonstrated skills.
