Your Class Plan
What You’ll Learn
Focuses on low-slope roof drainage, TPO detail quality, compatible repairs, and inspection. Torch-applied systems are a comparison and hazard-planning topic; this workshop does not include learner torch work.
Before you start: Roofing Basics or instructor-approved experience with roof layers, flashing, safe access planning, and product instructions.
Planned teaching timetable: 8:30 AM–4:30 PM on Day 1 and Day 2, including breaks and lunch. This is the planned class schedule; actual class dates, daily times and venue will be confirmed before enrollment.
By the end, you should be able to
- Compare low-slope membrane systems and identify compatible accessories.
- Trace drainage and detail continuity at seams, drains, curbs, and penetrations.
- Produce and inspect a supervised membrane sample to a selected manufacturer method.
- Distinguish patchable conditions from moisture/structural concerns needing further investigation.
- Prepare a repair scope with inspection, weather, fire, and warranty constraints.
Day 1 — Foundations and guided practice
8:30–9:00
Prerequisite check, roof-access/heat/fire controls, and ground-level training plan.
9:00–10:30
Low-slope roof assemblies, drainage, insulation/cover boards, attachment, and compatibility.
10:30–10:45
Break
10:45–12:00
Demonstrate TPO seam preparation and controlled hot-air equipment or inspect manufacturer-prepared seam specimens.
12:00–12:45
Lunch and drinks included
12:45–2:15
Lay out a drain/curb/penetration sample using one specified system.
2:15–2:30
Break
2:30–3:45
Practice approved membrane details at a controlled ground-level station; record inspection conditions.
3:45–4:30
Compare seam quality and identify deficiencies without improvising acceptance criteria.
Day 2 — Application, assessment and next steps
8:30–9:00
Review staged sample inspection and manufacturer acceptance references.
9:00–10:30
Modified-bitumen/torch-applied system comparison, fire-watch planning, moisture investigation, and repair limits.
10:30–10:45
Break
10:45–12:00
Diagnose ponding/seam/penetration cases; develop a compatible repair and inspection scope.
12:00–12:45
Lunch and drinks included
12:45–2:15
Complete an individual detail inspection, repair proposal, and customer/warranty handoff.
2:15–2:30
Break
2:30–3:00
Individual knowledge test: 10 course-specific questions; 20 available points.
3:00–4:00
Individual practical/project assessment, using the course rubric and observations gathered during the project.
4:00–4:30
Feedback, correction plan, certificate eligibility review, and recommended next steps.
Your hands-on project
Inspect and document a low-slope roof case, produce one ground-level membrane detail, and evaluate supplied seam specimens against the selected manufacturer criteria. Write a compatible repair scope and weather/fire-control plan.
Final knowledge test
Ten questions specific to Advanced Roofing, covering the skills, decisions, calculations and safety boundaries taught in this course. Each question is worth two points. Pass mark: 16 out of 20 (80%).
The instructor provides the test after training. Approved accessibility support may change how you respond while keeping the same learning standard.
Practical assessment
Complete the course project and demonstrate the skills individually. Five criteria are scored from 0–4. Pass mark: 16 out of 20 (80%), with no criterion below 2 and every critical safety check passed.
What your instructor will assess
- Identify roof-access, hot-tool, fire, and moisture hazards.
- Select one compatible system and trace drainage/continuity.
- Prepare a sound detail/sample with the specified method.
- Evaluate seams/defects using documented product criteria.
- Develop a realistic repair, inspection, and warranty-record plan.
Training boundaries: Ground-level rigs only. No learner torch-applied roofing, live flame, occupied-roof opening, or unplanned hot work. Any hot-air demonstration requires an approved station and direct instructor control.
Earn your certificate of completion
- Complete both days and all required learning activities; missed content must be made up.
- Pass the knowledge test and practical assessment separately; a strong score in one does not cancel a failed result in the other.
- Pass every critical safety check and receive the instructor’s sign-off.
If you need more practice, your instructor records the missing skills and assigns focused review and reassessment. Certificates are issued only after all requirements are met.
Your certificate records completion of this Construction Guys course. It is not a contractor license, trade license, or authorization to perform regulated work independently.
Next learning step: Estimating & Project Management. Your instructor can help you choose based on demonstrated skills.
